Matt Shumaker grew up in California’s Central Valley, surrounded by cotton fields, cattle ranches, and the hardworking people who made their living from the land. His father served for many years as a rural church pastor, and Shumaker’s earliest memories are rooted in small-town churches, country roads, and the lives of ordinary people whose resilience and faith would later shape the stories found throughout his artwork.Like many boys raised in the American West, Shumaker was rarely far from a cowboy hat and a toy six-shooter. Western films, frontier towns, cattle drives, lawmen, outlaws, and the enduring characters portrayed by actors like Clint Eastwood and John Wayne filled his imagination from an early age. Long before pursuing a career as an artist, he was drawn to the values, symbolism, and mythology of the American West—a fascination that continues to define his work today.Storytelling became the common thread woven throughout his life.Shumaker earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from California Baptist University, where he developed a strong foundation in drawing, composition, and visual storytelling. His creative journey, however, extended well beyond the studio. He worked for a film production company in Colorado before moving to Hollywood, where he served as both a production assistant and screenwriter. Later, while living in Hawaii, he taught high school English, encouraging students to discover the power of storytelling through literature and writing.
Music became another important chapter in that journey. As a professional singer, musician, and worship leader, Shumaker spent years communicating through songs, narratives, and live performance. That path eventually led to more than two decades serving as a Worship and Creative Arts Pastor, where creativity, faith, community, and storytelling became inseparable.
Throughout every season of life—whether working in film, education, ministry, or music—painting remained the constant.
Today, Shumaker’s paintings draw upon each of those experiences. The American West serves as both subject and metaphor. Cowboys, circuit riders, wildlife, expansive landscapes, and open country become visual symbols of grit, redemption, belonging, sacrifice, hope, and the enduring human spirit. Rather than documenting history, his work uses familiar Western imagery to explore timeless themes that resonate far beyond the landscape itself.
Known for bold compositions, expressive color, and narrative-driven imagery, Shumaker creates paintings that balance contemporary design with the timeless spirit of the West. His work invites viewers to slow down, engage with the story before them, and discover reflections of their own journey within each piece.
In many ways, Shumaker has spent his entire life telling stories. Today, he simply tells them with paint.
He lives in California’s Central Valley with his wife, Jen, and their wonderfully busy blended family. Together they continue to embrace a life marked by creativity, faith, curiosity, and a healthy appreciation for adventure.
